How to analyze a document

1. Phenomenon: Information or event that leads to a claim.

• What is the phenomenon that is trying to be explained?

2. Claim (Thesis): The assertion that something is true.

• What claim does the author make about a problem or situation? What does he or she assert is so?
• What theory is presented that explains the phenomenon?

3. Support: Examples of or explanations for the claim.

• What examples or explanations does the author present to support this claim?
• What evidence is presented that supports the thesis?

4. Qualifier: A restriction on the claim or evidence counter to the claim.

• What restrictions or explanations does the author present to support his or her claim?
• Are there any circumstances where this phenomenon is not applicable?
