How to analyze a document

Phenomenon: Information or event that leads to a claim.
- What is the phenomenon that is trying to be
explained?

Claim (Thesis): The assertion that something is
true.
- What claim does the author make about a problem
or situation? What does he or she assert is so?
- What theory is presented that explains the
phenomenon?
3.
Support: Examples of or explanations for the claim.
- What examples or explanations does the author
present to support this claim?
- What evidence is presented that supports the
thesis?
4.
Qualifier: A restriction on the claim or evidence
counter to the claim.
- What restrictions or explanations does the author
present to support his or her claim?
- Are there any circumstances where this phenomenon
is not applicable?
